On the Houle slipway, a dozen or so producers sell oysters by the dozen, already opened, on a paper plate with half a lemon. You settle on the granite blocks facing the beds and toss the shells onto the beach, as everyone has for a century.
The oyster market opens every morning and closes in the early afternoon. The harbour itself deserves another hour: the Pointe du Grouin is ten minutes away by car.
Good to know
- Bring a knife and a tea towel: it saves you the opening charge.
- About 8 € for a dozen no. 3 rock oysters, cheaper than anywhere else.
- At low tide the beds are uncovered and the view stretches all the way to the Mont.
